Filter presses are widely used for filtration of suspension with comparatively inconsiderable solids share. Filtration surface may range from 2 to 800 sq. m. Suspension upstream pressure constitutes up to 2 MPa. Frames and plates are made of cast iron, steel and steel with corrosion-resistant coating. Filters design also includes aluminum, titanium alloys, rubber and plastic ware.
Filter presses are characterized by large filtration surface per unit area, considerable pressure difference index (i.e. large driving energy), lack of moving parts, as well as separate plates operation checking feature.
Filter press operating process consists of four recurrent cycles:
Filter press appears to be widespread intermittent filter. It presents the system of frames and plates with filter material – “blanket” between them. Frames and plates are installed vertically in line and rest against support tracks by their side feet. Plates are smooth along the edges and corrugated in the center. Grooves at the bottom of the plate are provided with the channel for filtrate drainage. The following bores are located at the plate top part: central for suspension feed and two bores along the edges – for washing fluid feed. The same bores are perforated on the frames.
Frames and plates pack is tighten between two supporting plates –one is fixed, the other moves on rollers. When the pack assembling, plates bores are matched with frame bores and form end-to-end channels, where fluids and air are fed. Frames between the plates form cake chambers. “Blankets” edges serve as tight joints.
Suspension under the pressure is fed into the filter chambers through end-to-end channels, where filtrate penetrates the blankets, flows through the grooves into the channel and is cumulated in the volume capacity. Cakes remain inside the chamber. When the chambers are filled with solid content, the suspension feed in stopped and the washing fluid starts to be fed. Herewith every second drain channel is closed and the washing fluid penetrates both blankets and cake between them. In the following steps, chambers are blown off with air or hot steam. In conclusion, plates and frames are moved away and cake layer is removed. Then, filtration cycle is repeated.
If necessary, steel, cast iron or ceramic plates and frames are equipped with special channels, used for heating agents and refrigerants feed. Filter press working area can reach up to 140 sqm, pressure can reach up to 1.5 MPa.
Automated filter presses are widely used at manufacturing site. The pack of this type filter press consists of filter plates, each topped by perforated sheet. Remaining space between the sheet and plate surface is used for filtrate. Damp-proof shear walls are installed between the plates and frames. The plates and frames are tightened between two supporting plates and form the chambers, where suspension separation process takes place. Long-length blanket, passing between the plates and stretched by hydraulic device is applied as filter membrane.
When the pack assembling, plates bores are matched and form end-to-end channels. They are used for suspension, as well as washing fluid and snap blow air feed. The press is also provided with channels for filtrate, fluid and air drainage. After suspension separation, solid phase washing and drying, water under the pressure is fed into the space between shear wall and plate for cake extraction. Then, the plates are pulled apart and cake layer is removed from filter blanket. The cake is disposed in the pipeline located on blanket both sides.
This type filter presses primary virtues are presented by: process automation, compact size, cake extraction and minimum time expenditures for plates pulling apart, cake discharge and the pack assembly (action time takes no longer than a few minutes).
There exist fairly large number of filters, different in design, sizes and operating peculiarities. Frame-type filter press appears to be of the most common devices in chemical industry.
Frame-type filter press consists of the pack of rectangular disks and frames positioned interchangeably in line and hung to the backing. The disks are corrugated and covered with filter cloth. Suspension under the pressure flows through the channels into the frame cavity and is separated by filter membrane. Solids remain on the cloth and fluid penetrates the membrane and is drained through the plate gutters into the filtrate tank. After filtration process termination, the cake generated on the cloth, is removed. Frames and disks are detached and solids layer is discharged under the dead weight or removed with a knife. Then, the disks are closed and filtration cycle is repeated.
Chamber filter presses are used for suspensions cakes filtration and washing in different chemical plants. This filter type may be applied in the following industries:
In terms of design, chamber filter press consists of vertically positioned plates stack. There are several plates’ types:
All the plates are installed on linear tie bars. The bars are equipped with the guides where the plates are moving. When the press is closed, filter plate with neighboring plates form filter and washing chamber. Chamber thickness constitutes 30 mm. Suspension is fed though the manifold, formed by the plates suppression. Filtrate is drained through the choke, connected with drainage manifold, located at the plates’ bottoms. For cake washing, filter press is equipped with bores designed for washing fluid feed by reverse-direction flow. Washing filtrate is drained to the right from filter axis. Washing fluid is fed under filter cloth, then penetrates double cake thickness, and then penetrating the subsequent plate fabric, is discharged to the manifold though the channel.
Cloth regeneration mechanism consists of trolley with sprinkler moving on guides. Regeneration is conducted when sprinkler is forwardly moving along the plate. Qualitative regeneration is conducted by pure water. Water is collected in containment basin. The basin is opened by two hydraulic cylinders for cake discharge.
Joint sealing in packs of plates and frames or solely plates requires creating a definite force P by applying force clamp that can be calculated according to the formula:
P ≥ Qp + Rgas
where Qp is the exceptional force arising from filtration process or cake washing, it arises from internal pressure p influence on operating chambers cavity. Rgas if the shim response:
Qp = p·Fop
Rgas = m·p·Fpack
where Fop is the plate operating surface;
Fpack – surface, where tightening occurs;
m – added coefficient (m is always equal to 3 for filter presses).
Force p in calculations is presented as the basic operational load, for example, for filter press frame.
Calculation of force p for clamp mechanism with electromechanical drive includes a few steps: lifting screw fastness and resistance are calculated, then axial bearing durability and screw-nut torque factor are defined. Then an engine power is defined and kinematic chain elements are selected.
The same property for clamp mechanism with hydraulic drive, is calculated in the following way: hydraulic cylinder size is counted, then, in case of its oversize, hydraulic cylinder durability is counted.
When manual drive applying in clamp mechanism, drive-screw is counted first, than the necessary force for wheel shaft and ratchet gear lever is defined. V-shaped locking device for filters is usually counted on self-braking.
Filter presses are widely used in chemical industry. Operating process in these filters is accelerated by pushing the fluid under the pressure of nearly 3-4 atm.
Such filter consists of several chambers, divided by hard membranes with filter cloth between them. Membranes have channels, necessary for filter suspension circulation, washing fluid discharge and inflow, filtrate and other fluids discharge.
Suspension for filtration is fed to the chambers under specific pressure. The fluid penetrating the cloth is removed to the tray through the channels. The cake, in turn, sticks to filter membrane cloth and forms pressed kneaded filter cake.
If filtration should be conducted by applying refrigerating or heating, filter press is equipped with special channels, used for refrigerating medium or steam feed.
Filter presses may be divided into chamber and frame-type
Frame-type filter press consists of rectangular interchanged frames and plates. Filter cloth is pressed between them. Two neighboring plates, with a frame between them, form a separate filter chamber. Drainage appliance (groove) necessary for filtrate discharge into the collecting channels is positioned on such filter plates. Such an appliance simultaneously serves both neighboring chambers. Frames and plates possess sufficient thickness to withstand pressure in several atmospheres. The bores positioned at the top and axially matched, are applied for filter fluid feed into the chambers. Filtrate flows off through the cocks positioned at the plates’ bottom part.
Filtration in frame-type filter press is conducted in the following way. The fluid is forced into the central channel and then is directed to the chambers internal cavity through the bores in frames top walls. The fluid penetrating filter blankets, flows through the grooves to the pallets, then to the lower collecting channel. When the filtration process is over, the fluid is removed outside through the cock. The cake remains on the filter membrane inside the chamber. When the chambers are filled with cake, that is characterized by the drop of filtrate flowing from the cocks, it is necessary to start cake washing with subsequent its removing.
In order to wash the cake, filter press is equipped with channels passing the frames and plates top part and connected to chamber cavity. Water for cake washing is fed from the filter membrane reverse side and penetrates cake layer in the chamber, and this way is collected in the neighboring plates’ channel. In order to conduct washing, it’s unnecessary to open all the plates’ cocks, but only one cock at every pair of plates. Hence it’s necessary to open all the cocks during the filtration process. All the even-numbered plates’ cocks starting with the one, where suspension is fed, should be opened, but all odd- numbered plates’ cocks should be closed when washing. When the washing process is over, it’s necessary to dry the cake. For this purpose filter press should be blown off by pressurized air. Then, the cake may be discharged.
Frames thickness should range from 20 to 50 mm. Number of frames, used in filter presses, depends on required productive capacity and cake amount, and ranges from 10 to 60.
Plates and frames are mounted on horizontal guides fixed on the housing. Plates and frames are cuddled together by manual hydraulic or screwed closure. Screwed closure is used for slights number of frames. At large number of frames, screwed closure cannot provide for the required tightness. Hydraulic closure is formed by high pressure. It is equipped with pressurized reservoir or manual pump.
