Strainer filters. A brief overwiew
Straining filters are applied in different industries to clean working substance from various impurities (dirt, sand, rust, etc.). Normally, such filters are installed directly in front of pumping units. The filters primary function is mechanical impurities removal from the filtered fluid flow.
Straining filters design includes the following elements:
- cylinder with stainless steel grid;
- drainage hole;
- mud drain cock.
The discharge cock serves to purify a substance when the pipeline is in operation. Sizes of purifying grid mesh can be of different size, allowing cleaning medium from various impurities, including minor ones. Such filters can be coupled with pipelines via a collar or a flange.
This filter type is chiefly made of brass, cast iron, or stainless steel. As a rule straining filters with pipeline flange coupling type are manufactured of cast iron. This type of equipment is used for water quality enhanced requirements. The flange straining filters are installed with regulated valves mounted directly in front of flow meter. Such filter types include special magnets ensuring fluid additional purification from the iron-containing particles.

Straining filters operating principle is rather simple. All types of mechanical impurities containing in the process liquid are retained by the metal grid. The grid is in the flask having two holes: input and output. The both holes are connected with the pipeline. Filters mesh can be of different size according to which mechanical impurities of specific size are screened. The higher the fluid impurity level, the bigger mesh size should the filter have. The small mesh grid is clogged soon, if it is used for operation with heavily polluted fluids. Thus, straining filter mesh size should correlate with impurities particles size contained in filtered water.
This filter type is capable of operating in high pressure conditions which ensures a steady work flow in case of a sudden hydraulic shock.
Self-cleaning filters operating principle
The proposed automatic staining filters are high-tech though very simple to deal with self-cleaning filters. They are equipped with self-cleaning mechanism powered by electric motor drive. Oil comes to fine-mesh screen from outside via an inlet pipe. "The filter cake" is accumulated on the fine-mesh screen and increases the head loss.
This operation begins with the receipt of a signal on the flush valve opening, which is located at the bottom of the housing, and on starting up the drive rotating two nylon brushes that clean the cylindrical screen inner surface. The particles left on the screen are removed with rotating brushes, and then washed away through the open flush valve. The self-cleaning process can be launched automatically dependent on dp (differential pressure) value, space of time (timer) or manually from control panel. During self-cleaning process taking at least 45 sec (the time will be determined after the adaptation period) filtered oil keeps on flowing down the filter.
Control panel modes:
Filtration mode: it is a normal operational state. Without flushing, only signaling lamp on the control panel is on.
Flushing mode: a mode at which flushing process is launched. The drive and outlet valve are operating in compliance with the program.
1) Flushing from dp switch
Flushing from dp switch is - the filter flushing basic mode. When the differential pressure reaches a specified value (0.5 bar), the flushing starts.
2) Flushing from timer
TIMER is installed on the control panel and it allows launching self-cleaning process in specified intervals irrespective of the head loss. Timer is reset after each flushing cycle. TIMER mode can be switched off on the panel.
3) Manual self-cleaning: press TEST button on the control panel.
Cleaning cycle stages:
In the normal operational state the electrical control panel actuates the automatic filter in the following way:
1. The return signal from the dp switch or timer
2. 4 sec delay (only in the case of signal from dp switch)
3. Motor start
4. The flush valve is opened to the atmosphere
5. Min. self-cleaning time 45 sec (time-adjustable)
6. The motor stops
7. The flush valve is shut
The flushing volume would depend on the solid particles number, which would be retained by filter creating the need in the screen cleaning. As the filtration fineness equals to 4,000 μm and a relatively bigger filtration area from 1.4 to 1.7m² at 1,000 m³/h flow rate, we are apt to suppose that remnants exceeding 4,000 μm are limited. The filter in this case is rather a correcting unit, so it should not perform flushing more than one-three times a day (700-750 l of oil per one flushing at 1,250 m³/h flow rate for one and 1,400-1,750 l at 3,600 m³/h flow rate for the other), that is why oil losses would total about 0.01% of the overall flow.
The advantages of the straining filters are the following: low cost of their structure, simplicity of maintenance and mounting, as well as durability and high capacity. These filter types are efficient in mechanical impurities and contamination removal. Besides, relatively small size is these devices distinctive and inherent feature.
A disadvantage is usually attributed to the inability to filter biological, bacteriological and chemical contamination types. Moreover, non-cleaning models cleaning process is relatively complex.
Straining filters serve primarily for mechanical impurities retaining via process liquid filtration. The substance filtration is implemented with grid located in the housing. Straining filters are supplied in various designs:
- Relative to the pipeline connection type they distinguish collar straining filters and flange straining filters.
- Relative to purification rate, straining filters are divided into rough filtration filters ("mud traps") and fine filtration filters. Cleaning the filter grid of non-flushing filters requires the unit's disassembly. The flushing filters grids are cleaned manually. The model type determines the need of the mechanism disassembly. The flushing straining filter is the most suitable option for use in living environment.
Self-cleaning models are the most costly options as they are equipped with grid washing mechanisms. The filter grid is cleaned by a b water jet after pressing a special lever. These filters are cleaned without interruption of water supply and without removal of filter grid, which is viewed to be the advantage of the self-cleaning models.
- According to the material type used the straining filters are divided into cast iron, brass, cast or stainless steel.

Straining filters: cleaning details
The filters cleaning methods differ due to their type. For instance, non-flushing filters grid cleaning requires the unit's disassembly. Flushing filters are cleaned manually though some types require turning the water off at the main in advance. Then the flask should be opened, the grid should be removed and a powerful water jet should be directed on it. More costly self-cleaning filter models are equipped with cleaning mechanisms to clean the mounted grid. Washing such filter requires just a use of a specific lever. Filter grid washing takes just 30 seconds in models. The obvious advantage of such filter models is that there is no need in turning the water off and the unit's disassembly.
Service life extension
The majority of the contemporary straining filter models can flush the system without purified water supply interruption. Nevertheless, to achieve straining filters service life extension, it is recommended to:
- disassemble the system at regular times to provide a more thorough cleaning from soiling (the brush use is allowed);
- observe operational procedure;
- choose straining filter type correctly.

Straining self-cleaning filters
Straining self-cleaning filters are devices equipped with automatic cleaning system. These filter types are characterized by a bigger filter screen area and they cope perfectly with filtering of heavily contaminated fluid. The grid surface is cleaned by a suction nozzles system activated an electromotor or hydromotor. The electric motor worm gear drive transmits a helical movement over the grid surface. Typically, the standard equipment includes a controller managing the cleaning process. Flushing is characterized by operability, high performance and efficiency. The self-cleaning filter minimal operating pressure value is 1 AT, while the maximal is 40 AT. The loss level at filtration is 0.1 AT. Maximal water temperature is 95°C. The self-cleaning device filtration range varies from 10 to 3,000 microns.
The self-cleaning filters operating principle: at the first stage the contaminated fluid is supplied to the filter and is filtered in the coarse grid. Then the fluid is filtered through a stainless steel fine grid. The sediment of mud particles is gradually deposited on the internal wall. The said sediment functions as a fine filter, thus enhancing the cleaning efficiency. The pressure difference increases within a preset value 0.5 bar. The flushing is activated with a switch, which is functioning due to pressure difference. The flushing periodicity is set by timer irrespective of pressure difference values. At the beginning of cleaning the flushing valve is opened which results in a pressure difference between the collector pipe and the flush chamber. The pressure difference provides soiling removal from the filter grid by nozzles, which is followed by final soiling removal through the collector and the flush valve.
Metal straining filters
Metal straining filter housing is made of steel and equipped with steel grid cartridge with high anti-corrosion performance. The working surface petal-like structure (goffer) ensures cleaning surface area up to 2 m², which contributes to a significant operating life extension of the cartridge reducing the pressure loss. Housing compactness and fast cleaning of the filter element are essential features of such filters. Straining metal filter comprises the following basic elements: housing, cover, filter element, housing and filter element O-rings, vent cock, and connecting pipe for fluid input and output and sediment discharge.
These filters are used for purifying heavily contaminated water from solid inclusions. The advantages of such devices are: enhanced durability and strength, ability to withstand significant differential pressure, the grid mesh shape retaining within entire operation term, chemical stability in the wide Ph range.
There are two ways of filter element cleaning:
- manual, having removed it from housing in advance under the water jet;
- with back flow of open steam, washing solution, or pure water without removing it from the housing.
This filter type is extensively used for fine and coarse treatment of water, solutions, fluid fuels, as well as for turbine and other discharge industrial liquids.
Y-type and cone type straining filters
Straining filters of Y-type and cone type design protect pipeline systems sensing elements (valves, flow meters, nozzles, etc.) from mechanical particles. The diversity of these filters materials serves to expand their working media range. Therefore, these devices can operate with aggressive substances and liquids containing hydrogen sulfide.
The flow speed is retarded when fluid passes through the filter element in Y-type straining filters, and mud particles are getting into the cover cavity by inertia. The filter element itself does not allow the lighter weight particles further travel. Such filter should be mounted with cover down at horizontal sections, so that fluid flow direction would be correlated to the pointer on the filter housing.
The filter element is a hollow cylinder. A sheet with perforated holes serves as the cylinder external layer. A grid made of corrosion-resistant wire serves as the filter internal layer. The filter housing is equipped with bosses, which may contain special holes for pressure gauges connection.
Cone type straining filters are used in pipelines whose diameter equals to 300 mm. The filter element is located in housing, so it can be flushed, if the system is disassembled only.
Straining hydraulic filters
Straining hydraulic filters are vertically directed cylindrical devices. This type of devices is equipped with removable cover, which allows mounting and regular cleaning filter elements located inside the housing. The filter lower bottom is elliptical one-piece element. Hydraulic filters are mounted via standard supports and are equipped with draining device, air vent and connecting pipes. Housing, cover, filter element, support, as well as rotating and slinging device are the main elements of the straining hydraulic filters.
This type of devices is used as protection against solid inclusions and mechanical impurities for the following equipment: pumping units, controlled-volume pumps on suction mains, purification plants and other equipment. Such filters are used in chemical, petrochemical and oil processing industries.
Straining filters can be of different types dependent on the pipeline connection type, material design, screening dimensions, pressure value and material design. Straining hydraulic filters screening diameter ranges from 50 to 700 mm. There are two ways of coupling straining hydraulic drainage filters with equipment: flange coupling and welding.
As a rule, straining filter with flange coupling is mounted before control valves, flow meters and other devices. Such filters are manufactured from high-duty cast iron. Straining flange filter ensures high-quality water filtration, as its design contains easy replaceable filter element with original weaving type.
In terms of design the straining hydraulic filters are divided into horizontal and vertical. Both types are equipped with magnetic traps. Such filters are made of steel. The working media are water, air and other non-aggressive environments. Operating temperature ranges from -20°С to +120°С.
Straining hydraulic drainage filters for pipelines are special devices that separate solid particles and impurities during export of oil products and liquefied gas. Consequently, filters of the above type serve to protect tank equipment. Hydraulic drainage filters function in maximal pressure conditions of 16 MPa and minimal temperature 70 °С.
Water treatment straining filters
Currently, many water treatment methods are used in industry and households. The most frequently used method is prepurification method (mechanical water treatment) which involves the use of two filter types: straining and disk.
