The following reasons are taken into account when selecting a stand type: rolling force intensity in each stand, speed mode, temperature mode, and stand performance. Stand metal consumption is significantly taken into account. In stand design for steel small-section rolled product production one could observe a steady tendency to use prestressed and housingless stands occurred in last decades. Stands with housings are rarely used now, only in special cases.
Prestressed stands (PSS) have quite high radial rigidity, compactness and relatively small metal consumption.
In these stands, upper and lower cushions at each roll side are attached with clamping bolts with the force exceeding significantly the maximum metal pressure on rolls during rolling. This preliminary load removes gaps between cushions and connection parts.
Rolling pressure is transferred directly to cushions and clamping bolts while omitting multiple gaskets, pressure screws, cartridges, etc.
Roll opening in prestressed stands can be adjusted in two ways: rough adjustment (when assembling stands) is performed by means of thickness alteration of the gaskets installed between lower and upper cushions; fine adjustment is performed by means of rotation of eccentric bushings that are installed in the borings of upper cushions.
The most commonly used reinforcement steel for reinforced concrete structures is a type of a rolled product. Its production volume and consumption is increased, along with quality requirements.
Usage of housingless stands ensures production of a wide range of assortment with tighter tolerances. The product net cost of 1 ton is approximately 1.15 times cheaper in comparison with analogous production amount manufactured in a traditional way. In this case, the net cost is decreased not only because of low capital costs, but because of low processing costs. Horizontal and vertical stands with cantilever rolls, cartridge stands and 3-hi stands are also used in plants.
Compactness, durability and easy maintenance are features of housingless stressed cartridge stands. These stands can be assembled in different configurations.
Bases and reducers can be rotated by 90°, this way you can turn a horizontal stand in a vertical stand or vice versa in a couple of minutes.
Two-roll reverse movable stands are used in roughing and intermediate rolling. These stands are fully automated and allow manufacturing product schedules with no limits using the same stand set.
In some cases, when it is required to manufacture products of small standard size, stands with cantilever attached rolls in various configurations are used such as horizontal, vertical convertible (transformable), universal, and etc. Cantilever stands have a number of advantages, such as compactness, easy and quick roll transfer. However, due to cantilever load application transferred rolling forces are lower than in the stands with a two-sided roll support.

Switching to 100% rolling in single-strand mills without tilting ensures manufacturing of products with higher precision profile and higher stability of mechanical properties.
- A decrease of billet heating temperature in continuous small section and wire mills from 1100-1150°C to 900°C reduces metal heat losses in roughing stands and almost fully exclude decarbonizing of high carbon steels under high temperatures.
- An increase in weight of the billet made of high alloy steels from 1-1.5 tons to 2-4.5 tons for small and medium section mills allows to extend an outcome of valid products, especially when manufacturing rolled products in coils.
- An increase of the billet length and rolling speed, decrease of time required for change and setting ensure higher performance of rolling mills.

Cooling racks operate as a part of mechanical equipment of section and pipe mills. They may be supplied as accessories for milling complexes and as single items for modernization of metallurgical shops.
The cooling racks consist of approach, run-out and alignment roller tables, movable and immovable racks, piler and tilting devices, lubrication system.
Design features of cooling racks are as follows:
- the dump valve drive is connected from the longitudinal shaft, which contributes to the reliability of rolled products receipt;
- if necessary, an alignment roller table can be provided for single-piece position alignment of rolled product ends during cooling;
- a device ensuring full protection of friction units from dirt and slag is used in gear rack drive, the device allows to go without annual repair of friction units;
- all cooling rack transmissions are installed on the antifriction bearings which ensure maintenance-free operation for the whole cooling rack lifetime;
- approach roller table and dump valve design allows to dump of rolled products feeding continuously;
- special high-precision gear couplings are used for transmission shaft connection, they ensure easy mounting and decrease commissioning and repair time;
- all plates with leveling grooves are cast of cast-iron into a metallic casting mold which ensures high precision of the groove position towards mounting bases and, therefore, straightness of cooled rolled products.
