Venturi scrubbers. A brief overwiew
The high degree of dust separation from gas is accomplished by water scrubbing. During wet gas cooling water vapor condenses on dust particles. Thus, weight of dust particles increases, and they can easily be separated from gas by gravity (if gas moves straight) or inertial forces (if gas moves tangentially).
Wetting and absorption can be produced using:
- water film running off the inner walls of the device;
- water spraying inside the device;
- combined method.
Pre-purification and cooling of gas is carried out in hollow scrubbers or packed scrubbers. In terms of design, scrubber is a tower, having circular or rectangular cross-section. Polluted gas is fed into hollow devices as a stream and it passes from bottom to top through the scrubber section, at different levels of which jets are spraying the absorbing liquid. The speed of the gas subject to be purified is 1.5 m/sec.
Better pre-treatment is achieved by using of packed scrubbers. Packing is made of coke or quartz and is sprayed through special distribution devices. In such devices gas may be supplied at a rate of more than 1.25 m/sec.
Collecting scrubbers are used to collect dust particles from a gas stream using a liquid.
Benefits of dust collecting scrubbers:
- collecting of particles, having size of 0.1 µm.
- low cost devices.
- high efficiency of dust collection as opposed to dry method.
- possibility to use devices for gases moistening and cooling.
- using of dust collecting scrubbers, when treating gases of high temperature and humidity.
There are three ways of contacting of dust-laden gas stream with liquid.
- Gas-and-dust stream is fed into the liquid, in which it breaks up into bubbles, where dust particles get enclosed. When these bubbles move through the liquid, the particles are wetted and removed from the gas stream. Foam and bubble scrubbers operate according to this principle.
- The gas stream, subject to be purified, is directed into the device, containing washing liquid, and collides against the surface of the liquid. At that dust particles removal occurs as a result of their collision against a surface or droplets of liquid. When using this method, settling of particles occurs usually on the surface of droplets. Hollow scrubbers, impingement scrubbers, as well as high-speed turbulent scrubbers shall be marked among such devices.
- Surface and internal elements of devices are sprayed with liquid in dust collectors, having wetted surface. At that, film of liquid collects dust particles, which are taken from the gas stream. This is the mode of operation of packed scrubbers and wet cyclone separators.
In addition to the above, some devices operate due to a combination of several methods in one device. That is why it is not possible to calculate the basic parameters of the wet dust collector, as well as the effectiveness of its operation as per a particular method.
Hollow jet scrubbers
Hollow jet scrubbers are the simplest wet scrubbers. Such devices represent a tower having a circular or rectangular cross section, and wherein gas to be treated makes a contact with the liquid, sprayed by means of a jet. Possibility of purification of gases, containing a large amount of dust, as well as a small hydraulic resistance shall be marked among the advantages of such devices.
It should be noted that the higher the difference between velocity of gas and droplets is, and the smaller the droplets’ size is, the higher the efficiency of the scrubber is.
Hollow scrubbers are divided by the direction of gas movement into direct flow scrubbers and scrubbers with cross-feed movement of a liquid. In this case jets, out of which the liquid is sprayed, may be located in the middle of the device, and on its perimeter. Type of jets is chosen depending on the required droplet size. Anyway, the droplet size should be such as not to be carried off by gas stream, having a velocity of νg = 0.6-1.5 (m/sec).
In order to calculate the hollow scrubber, the following sequence is used:
- A predetermined consumption of dust-laden gas is used to determine the cross-sectional area of the scrubber. At that the velocity of gas stream is taken as equal to 1 m/sec.

The height of the device is assumed to be H=2.5D, where D is the diameter of the counter-flow scrubber.
- Next, it is necessary to determine the fluid flow rate m. This value is taken from the 0.5-8 l/m3 range of gases. If gases are strongly dust-laden, then m shall be taken as equal to 6 to 8 l/m3. Thus, Vl = mQ, where Vl is the volume flow rate of liquid, and Q is a rate of a purified gas.
- After the calculations are produced, the effectiveness of gas purification from dust shall be calculated in each case.
Packed scrubbers. Description
Packed scrubbers differ from hollow scrubbers by different types of jets, located over their cross section. It makes sense to use such devices only for collecting a dust, well wetted by liquid. This is especially true in cases, where the purification process is accompanied by the absorption or cooling of gases. Such devices can produce a cross-sectional, direct-flow or counter-flow spraying.
Packed scrubber, using a cross-sectional spraying, provides a 40% less water consumption, than the one with a counter-flow. In addition, this scrubber has a lower hydraulic resistance.
The jet has the following parameters:
- specific surface area a, which represents a geometric surface of bodies.
- void volume s0.
- diameter, which is determined by the formula:

Tray-type scrubbers. Process steps of dust collection
Tray-type scrubbers operate according to the following principle: treated gases interact with the liquid on the trays of different designs, wherein the interaction depends on the velocity of the dust-laden stream. If the gas velocity is small, the gas stream enters the liquid in the form of bubbles. The particles of dust, which are larger than 5 µm, remain on the surface of these bubbles.
However, foam devices have greater efficiency. They operate with the flow of dust-laden gas, the speed of which exceeds 5 m/sec. Thus, it is possible to collect dust particles, size of which is up to 2 µm.
Stages of dust collection process in tray-type scrubbers:
- settling of dust on the lower surface of the tray.
- dust collection at the moment, when the gas stream enters the foam layer.
- dust settling in the foam layer.
A fairly uniform distribution of liquid in the device and a small hydraulic resistance are the main advantages of tray-type scrubbers. Low liquid load and a small efficiency collection of particles, not exceeding 5 µm, shall be marked as disadvantages.
Impact-inertia scrubbers represent devices, operation of which is based on the contact of dust-laden gas and liquid using an impact of dust-and-gas stream against liquid. This creates droplets, having size of 300 to 400 µm.
They are small in size due to the high velocity of gas stream, which is to be marked among the advantages of the device. Besides, such scrubbers have a good separation efficiency, and they can be used to purify a gas, containing a great amount of dust particles.
The fact that liquid circulates therein very rapidly despite the devices are not provided with any equipment, producing swirling action, represent the main feature of such devices. Doyle scrubbers and RotoClones are the most common devices of this type.
Dust-laden gas stream enters the device through the pipes in Doyle scrubbers. The cones, located at the bottom of these pipes, increase gas velocity up to 55 m/sec. After this gas flow collides against liquid surface. Thus, a curtain of drops occurs. It is necessary to maintain a constant level of liquid in them, so that such devices could function properly.
Curved conduits, partially filled with liquid, are arranged in RotoClones. The dust-laden gas stream collides against the liquid surface, collecting part of it and making it to move along the bottom guide of the conduit. Motion speed is 10 to 15 m/sec. Thereafter, the liquid is thrown to the top guide, and then it falls in a form of a continuous water curtain. It is necessary to install the scrubbing droplets separator, in order to prevent droplets entrainment. The slurry, collected at the bottom of the scrubber, is discharged periodically by means of a drag conveyor. RotoClones are currently rarely used in the industry.
Gas washing scrubbers
Gas washing scrubbers perform water scrubbing. The operating principle of this device is such, that when the rotor, equipped with bars, is spinning, rotor bars pass in the gaps between the bars, fixed on the walls of the body. During this movement rotor bars finely spray liquid into the gas. The microscopic droplets of liquid moisten dust, contained in the gas, and they are discharged together with it. This device combines the functions of dust separator and fan. The gas, subject to be treated, is cooled to about 50°C - 60°C before charging into a gas washing scrubber. After treatment in the gas washing scrubber, mist is eliminated from the purified gas. Currently gas washing scrubbers are actively kept out by more modern electrostatic precipitators.
Centrifugal scrubbers. Venturi scrubber
The polluted gas is supplied to a centrifugal scrubber tangentially with respect to the body walls and starts to rotate rapidly. Dust particles are thrown to the walls of the scrubber under the centrifugal force and are discharged together with water running off the walls. Jets provide uniform distribution of spraying water over the walls. The cooled purified gas exits through the top outlet, which is regulated by the throttle valve. The waste water goes through the hydraulic valve.
Venturi scrubber is one of the most successful devices for water scrubbing. In such a device water is supplied through the inlet in the throat of the tube. The pressure level during stream supply can range from 0.3 to 1 atm. The water stream is subjected to fine spraying by means of a rapidly moving stream of gas (up to 70 m/sec), which is blown into the device by fan. Flow rate declines in the widest part of the pipe, and finely sprayed liquid absorbs dust. As a result, the liquid droplets become bigger, making it possible to discharge them from gas using a cyclone separator. Water separation from slurry takes place in the settling tank, and then water is again supplied to the scrubber. Venturi scrubber is capable of separating of up to 99% of fine dust, having a particle size in the range of 1.5 to 0.5 µm from gas stream. The simplicity of the device design and the ability to eliminate mist from gas are the advantages of this scrubber.
It is conventional to consider a high degree of purification in the field of action of centrifugal forces, low flow resistance, simplicity of design and cost-effectiveness as advantages of all kinds of centrifugal scrubbers.
Wet dust separation (absorption gas purification)
Wet dedusting is a connection of dust particles and fine water droplets, whereby the dust particles are separated from the gas.
To purify the gas it is directed against the direction of flow of sprayed water droplets.
In the process of gas flowing inert particles do not change their direction of motion relatively to the droplets, and collide with droplets. Due to this dust particles are adhered to droplets and are settled.
The finer the water droplets are, and the sooner these dust particles are wetted by the droplets, the better their settling is. This settling method is suitable for the particles, having size of 0.5-500 µm.
Devices, designed for settling by wet dust separation, are called scrubbers or gas washers. Such devices may have various modifications.
Tower scrubber is a simplest scrubber, representing a tube, located vertically. In it water droplets are sprayed from the top, and move down gradually. The gas, subject to be purified, moves upstream mist of water droplets.
Washing towers represent tubes, standing upright, which are filled with packing elements. Washing liquid is fed from the top. Packing surface is sprayed by means of it. The gas, laden with dust, passes through the bulk packing. The particles adhere to the water surface, and then the dust flows down together with the liquid.
Operation of the rotational scrubber is based on the fact that the mist is created by the rotating discs and jet. The gas passes through the washing liquid mist and dust particles adhere to water particles. Washing liquid droplets become saturated with dust and then they are settled on metal sieve cloth.
The separator, equipped with ring spray jets, operates on the principle of pressure jump, and it is quite popular in many industries. Such a separator is used for fine dust settling, and for impurity gas, and for liquid mist.
In order to separate dust from gas, the washing liquid is fed into the gas stream under pressure. Some of the particles thus already adhere to washing liquid. The gas, containing liquid droplets, is injected through gaps of jets packs. Gaps of jets packs have a width of 0.3-1.1 mm. They are shaped so, that the gas stream is directed along an arcuated path. Thus, under the centrifugal force, dust particles and liquid droplets are carried on the separator walls and thereafter flow out of it as a slurry.
Jet scrubber is a large enough water jet pump. This pump draws the gas, laden with dust, into the washing water, moving at a very high speed. A gas, laden with dust, and water are mixed intensively in the jet scrubber. Thus, about 90% of dust is adhered to water droplets.
Due to the fact that jet scrubbers use a large amount of water, this water is passed in a closed loop.
There exists an improved version of a jet scrubber, which has a flange mounted cyclone separator for water droplets settling. It is called a Venturi scrubber.
The polluted gas is supplied into such a device through the inlet in the pipe, equipped with jets. A turbulent flow of aerodispersion occurs during a gas supply. Thus, strong vortexes take place, so that water and dust particles are mixed. Almost 98% of dust particles are adhered to the liquid droplets in this device. Aerodispersion then moves into the cyclone separator part of the scrubber. Water droplets, containing dust particles, are thrown onto the cyclone separator walls by centrifugal force and are settled on them. Liquid with dust is discharged from the scrubber in the form of a slurry, purified gas is discharged through the submerged tube.
A sufficiently small water and power consumption, high efficiency of gas purification, as well as a space-saving design should be marked among the advantages of such a device.
Wet separators are mostly used for advanced treatment of gas, from which large dust particles have been already eliminated. Such devices settle particles, having size of 0.1 µm. The liquid slurry, formed by settling of dust particles this way is subject to thickening.
