Brief overview of shell and tube heat exchangers

Historical background

For the first time, the device of this type was designed in early XX century when it became necessary for thermal stations to have heat exchangers with large heat exchange surface and that could operate at rather high pressure.

Nowdays, shell-and-tube heat exchangers are used as preheaters, condensers and evaporators. Many years of operation experience and multiple engineering developments have resulted in significant improvement of their design.

At the same time, early in the previous century, widespread application of shell-and-tube heat exchangers was also started in petroleum industry. Heavy conditions of petroleum refining created a demand for petroleum fluid mass heaters and coolers, condensers and evaporators for separate fractions of crude petroleum and for organic liquids.

High temperatures and pressure, during operation of a device, as well as poor quality of petroleum itself and its fractions cause quick contamination of parts of the device. Due to that, design features of heat exchangers should allow rapid and thorough cleaning and servicing.

Description

The device is used for heat exchange between the flows of substances in different states of matter:

  • steam-liquid;
  • liquid-liquid;
  • gas-gas;
  • gas-liquid.

The device design includes a bundle of tubes placed within a cylindrical housing. As a rule, the shell-and-tube heat exchanger body is made of welded; more rarely, it is made from casting.

Rolling or welding is used to fit the tubes to two tube grids. The fitting method depends on the type of structural material. As a rule, the length of the tubes is 5-7 m. The tubes, arranged in a bundle, are placed staggered at vertices of an equilateral triangle. The interval is s=(1.25-1.30)·dП, where dП is the outer diameter of the tubes. Such heat exchangers are provided with two covers with nipples. The covers are removable and are used for inlet and outlet of a heat transfer agent, which is flowing in pipes. The tube space and the intertube space are separated. The second heat transfer agent is in the intertube space, which is also provided with inlet and outlet nipples. |For ease of cleaning, a substance containing solids flows in tubes. The substance is fed under high pressure and has aggressive properties, thus protecting tubes against corrosion. The heat transfer coefficient from the intertube space is lower because the passage area of the intertube space exceeds significantly the general total flow section of the tubes. However, volumetric consumptions of heat transfer agents are equal. To eliminate the effect described, the speed of a heat transfer agent is increased; for this purpose, various partitions are placed in the intertube space.

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers can be placed vertically or horizontally depending on available site conditions. This device can be connected serially if a longer heat transfer agent passe is required. Parallel interconnection might be used, if the necessary number of tubes cannot be placed in a single housing.

All in all, multipass heat exchanger is used to increase speed and intensity of heat exchange by making the passes of heat transfer agents longer.

Two-pass shell-and-tube heat exchanger is equipped with a gate in the top coverto allow the heat transfer agent to passes in tubes through the half of a bundle, and then to pass backwards through the second half of a bundle. The second medium flows in the intertube space where sectional gates are used to make the pass longer. Three-pass and six-pass heat exchanger does also exist.

Generally, rigid fastening of a tube bundle and housing is typical for all the multipass heat exchangers. These heat exchangers are used if the difference in temperatures between both heat transfer agents is small. If the difference in tubes and in intertube space media temperatures is high, the multipass heat exchagers are equipped with compensating equipment.

A lens compensator has the simplest design comparing to other compensator types. Such compensators are used when the pressure is low in the intertube space (up to 1 MPa).

There is almost no limits for thermal elongation compensation in devices with floating head. This device has two grids: one grid is fastened rigidly, and another moves freely. In these designs, the tube bundle can be dismantled for repair and cleaning. To maximize reliability of separation between the tube and intertube spaces, the cover is equipped with floating head nipple with gland seal.

Configuration versions

In the course of time, shell-and-tube heat exchangers gained wide application. This was due to their simple and reliable design as well as large number of possible configurations suitable for various operation conditions such as:

  •  vertical or horizontal configuration of a heat exchanger, boiling or condensation, single-phase flows of a heat transfer agent on hot or cold side of the device;
  •  possible operating range of pressures: from vacuum to quite high values;
  • variability of pressure differences within wide ranges at both sides of heat exchange surface due to a large number of design versions;
  • requirements in terms of thermal stresses can be satisfied without significant growth of cost of the device;
  • device dimensions – from small to the largest, up to 7000 m²;
  • materials that can be chosen depending on the requirements for corrosion, pressure and temperature mode, taking their related cost into consideration;
  • heat exchange surfaces can be used both within tubes and externally;
  • a tube bundle being accessible for repair and cleaning of tubes.

Despite wide applications of shell-and-tube heat exchangers alternative design options should be considered while searching the right device.

Components

The main components of shell-and-tube heat exchangers are tube bundles fastened in tube grids, covers, shells, branch pipes, chambers and supports. As a rule, in these heat exchangers, the tube space and intertube space are separated by gates.

evaporators and condensers for refrigerator plants.

Scope and area of application

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are used in industrial freezing equipment, in petrochemical, chemical and food processing industry, for heat water treatment pumps and sewerage systems.

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers can be also used in chemical and thermal industry for heat exchange between liquid, gaseous and steam-like heat transfer agents in thermochemical processes. Nowadays, these devices are the most widely used.

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers can easily withstand temperature and pressure changes. Tube bundles are not being destroyed by vibrations and hydraulic impacts.

Low proneness to contamination of device

The heat exchangers tubes does not have a tendency to contaminate, can be cleaned quite easily by cavitation impact method, chemical method or, for dismountable device, by mechanical methods.

Long service life

The service life is quite long – up to 35 years.

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers, which are now applied in industry, are adapted for a wide variety of process media such as sanitary, sea and river water, petroleum products, oils, and chemically active media; even the most aggressive media hardly reduce reliability of such heat exchangers.
