Turbine oil purification filters. A brief overwiew
Turbine oils are designed to optimize and increase the efficiency of production processes by providing good protection of equipment parts and components. These oils are designed to lubricate and cool the bearing assemblies, as well as contacting moving parts in units, such as a turbo-compressor machines, turbines (gas or steam), hydro turbines, turbine pumps, turbine-generators and turbo blowers. The same oils are used as a working fluid for a variety of control systems of turbine-generators or turbines. Also, turbine oils are used in hydraulic and circulation systems of all kinds of industrial machinery. They must meet the requirements:
- to be stable with respect to oxidation;
- not to precipitate during continuous operation;
- not to form stable emulsions with water in order to prevent its penetration into the lubrication system;
- to protect the surface of metal parts from corrosion.
The properties, listed above, can be achieved by using high quality oils, the implementation of deep purification of them and the introduction of additives, improving properties of turbine oils (antioxidant, anti-corrosion and water separation). High-quality purification of turbine oil and pressure oil lines contributes to reliable work of turbine-generators for a long period of operation. Checking of failures, malfunctions, and damages of power equipment shows, that failure of oil supply system and turbine oil quality deterioration is connected with up to 20-25% of all possible failures. If turbine oil for steam turbines, feed electric pumps and turbopumps ceases to comply with the requirements of operation, it must be subjected to quality purification. If oil stability cannot be recovered, it must be replaced. Using of low-quality turbine oil causes a reduction in the functional reliability of equipment and leads to untimely wear. Oils, contaminated with slurry and moisture, become one of the reasons for electroerosion and failures of power equipment.
High-quality turbine oil resists oxidation, protects the parts from corrosion, does not precipitate even after prolonged use, does not form a stable emulsion with water. Also used turbine oils should be free of visible mechanical impurities, slurry, water, and residue. Otherwise the oil should be replaced. Failure to do so is the main criterion leading to failure of turbine-generators. Also the maximum values of acidity number are taken into account, and antioxidant additive is introduced into it to extend the operational life of turbine oil.
The aging process of constantly used oil leads to deterioration of the original properties, which makes it unsuitable for further use. But considering the high price of turbine oil and the volumes, in which they are purchased for the large-scale enterprises, the total replacement becomes excessively costly. This raises the need to regenerate turbine oil using purification for further use. Methods of continuous purification for operation are preferable, because they can increase the period of operation without oil recharging. However, implementation of continuous oil purification at operating equipment is possible only when using small, space-saving equipment, allowing a simple assembly and disassembly: filters, separators, adsorbers. If the equipment is more sophisticated and huge, it has to be installed in a separate room, then purification should be produced using oil drain. It is not rational to use expensive equipment for oil purification for a single station, as the corresponding equipment will operate only periodically, so these units are made in a mobile version. It makes sense to use stationary devices of any type for large block stations using large volumes of oil.
Existing methods for purification or recovery of waste turbine oils are classified into physical, physico-chemical and chemical methods.
With the implementation of these methods of purification chemical properties of purified oil will not be changed. The main physical methods include settling, filtration and separation, with the help of which oil purification from water and impurities, not soluble in oils, occurs.
This is the most simple and cheap method for separating oil from slurry, water and mechanical impurities, produced in settling tanks, of special design with cone bottom. After a certain time, media with different specific weight are separated into layers. Oil, having a smaller specific weight, rises to the top, while water with mechanical impurities sinks to the bottom and then it is discharged via outlet provided for this purpose in the cone part of the tank.
An oil tank itself can be used as a settling tank, but it lacks the conditions, necessary to separate oil-and-water emulsion. Oil in the oil tank is in constant motion, which results in continuous mixing of layers, and air, present there, eliminates the difference in the densities of the constituent components of oil-and-water emulsion and complicates separation process. The settling tank has more favorable conditions and oil settling time is not limited. Low productivity due to long duration of separation phase is the main disadvantage of this method of turbine oil purification. Also settling tank requires considerable space for location and increases the degree of fire risk in it.
Separation under the centrifugal forces in the separator drum helps the separation of water and particles from oil. It is considered to be the most efficient method of purifying turbine oils from water with impurities. Slow oil purifying separators (with speed of 4500 - 8000 rpm) are used more often in comparison with the high-speed prototypes (with speed of 18000 - 20000 rpm).
Separators are divided into:
- vacuum (also partially remove moisture from the air);
Type of contamination specifies the oil purification method by separators: by clarification method (for solid impurities, for slurry, as well as low content of water in oil) or purification method (with vigorous water influx into oil). Different drums are used for these methods, at that drum performance during clarification process is 30% higher than performance of the drum, serving for purification. The separator can carry out oil purification at the operating turbine, if there is a vigorous water influx into oil. Usage of two separators connected in series improves the quality of treatment, when the first separator is designed for purification, and the second one is designed for clarification.
The separation of impurities, insoluble in oil, by passing the oil through a filter porous surface is considered to be an oil filtration. Filter paper, burlap, cardboard, belting, felt are used as filter materials. During turbine oils filtration frame-type filter presses are applied, equipped with their own oil pump (vortex or rotating), which transmits the pressurized oil of up to 0.49 MPa (3.5 kgf/cm2) through the filter material, which is constantly renewed, and sandwiched between two frames. Oil filtration through a filter press is usually combined with its purification in the separator. In the case of vigorous water influx into oil it is first treated in a separator and then in a filter press. Oil purification can be carried out also in the operating turbine, when, downstream the second separator operating as per the clarification principle, a filter press is connected, which provides especially quality treatment.
To provide proper functioning of oil system of turbine -generator, it is necessary not only to constantly purify oil, but also periodically clean the entire system, for example after the repair. For these purposes, a well-proven hydrodynamic method of oil systems purification is used, when the entire oil system, except for bearings, is cleaned by pumping of pre-treated oil. This process is based on the turbulent flow, generated in the area near walls, and it is implemented at a speed 2 times exceeding the operating speed. The process temperature exceeds 60°C.
Advantages of hydrodynamic treatment:
- oil film is not broken between metal and oil;
- appearance of corrosion on the surfaces of the oil system is eliminated;
- no need to use chemical descaling solutions;
- dismantling of oil system is eliminated;
- the complexity of treatment is reduced by 20 - 40%, duration of overhaul is reduced.
These methods of recovery and purification of turbine oils contain methods, in which the chemical composition of the purified oil partially changes. As an example, the oil treatment can be produced by means of adsorbents and its washing can be carried out using hot condensate.
The adsorption method is based on absorption of dissolved substances contained in oil by means of solid materials (highly porous), called as adsorbents, facilitating the removal of organic acids with low molecular weight, resins and other dissolved impurities from oils. Various materials can serve as adsorbents: alumina oxides, silica-gel, various bleaching earths (bauxite, shale, diatomaceous earths, bleaching clay). Adsorption efficiency, apart from the general surface of the adsorbent bed, is determined by the pore size and the quantity of absorbed molecules.
Materials, pore size of which is of 20-60 Angstrom units, which promotes the absorption of high molecular compounds, such as resins and organic acids, can serve as absorbent materials for turbine oils. For this purpose, a widely used silica gel is suitable. And alumina oxide absorbs well organic, acids with low molecular weight, while it absorbs resinous substance much worse. These two adsorbents are artificial, that is why their cost is high, especially that one of alumina oxide. Natural adsorbents (bauxite, clay, diatomite) are much cheaper, but their efficiency is much lower.
Using adsorbents oil can be treated in two ways:
- contact (mixing oil with fine powder of adsorbent);
- percolation (oil passing through a fixed bed of adsorbent).
Before purification by contact method oil must be preheated. To clean the oil from the adsorbent it is subsequently passed through a press filter and the adsorbent is lost in the process.
Percolation method consists in passing of oil, heated to 60 - 80°C, through layers of granular adsorbent, loaded into special devices (absorbers). This method of regeneration of turbine oils, in contrast to the contact one, allows to use adsorbent repeatedly and is produced at existing equipment without draining oil from the oil tank. The treatment process becomes cheaper and allows to use more effective and expensive adsorbents for purification of oils.
Adsorber (of mobile or stationary type) is a simple cylinder of welded design, which is loaded with granular adsorbent. The filter, designed to retain small particles of adsorbent, is located in the top part of adsorber. The process of oil filtration goes from the bottom up, which ensures almost complete pushing out of air and small filter clogging. The adsorbent along with oil aging products can absorb water, and in the case of a large amount of water in the oil adsorbent is rapidly losing its ability to absorb. So before adsorbent treatment oil should be thoroughly purified of mud and water.
In the overall scheme of oil purification adsorption takes place after oil treatment by separators and filter presses. Adsorbent is easy to be restored after use by flushing hot air (200°C) through it. It is important to know that the adsorption purification method cannot be used for oils with additives, as adsorbents completely absorb all additives (except for ionol).
Washing by condensate
Oil washing by condensate is carried out at increased acidity number of oil and presence of acids, soluble in water, with low molecular weight, in oil. Experience has shown that other oil indicators are also improved after oil washing: presence of slurry and mechanical impurities decreases and the ability of the emulsion to the separation into layers increases. To increase the level of acids solubility, oil and condensate in an amount of 50 - 100% of the amount of the washed oil are heated up to 70-80°C. To increase the mass transfer area, condensate and oil are thoroughly mixed. At this acids with low molecular weight are transferred from oil into water, with which they are discharged out of the separator. And slurry and impurities, present in oil, are moistened, whereby their density increases and the separation improves.
Oil can be washed by condensate in a separate tank, where water and oil circulate. Circulation is carried out by means of steam or pump. Such washing is done during the turbine operation, while the oil is drained from the oil tank, and is fed back into tank after washing.
Chemical methods for turbine oil purification should include purification by all kinds of chemicals (acids or alkalis). This method is used for purification of oils, undergoing chemical change during operation.
Alkaline treatment method is used in the case of a strong deterioration of oil in the case of failure of all the previously described methods. Alkali neutralizes organic acids, residues of sulfuric acid (when treating oils with acid), removes esters and other compounds. Thus the formation of salts occurs, transferred into water solution. Their removal takes place at the subsequent treatment of oil. Typically 5 - 14% tri-sodium phosphate or 2.5 - 4% sodium hydroxide can be used. Alkaline treatment process is implemented at a temperature of 40 - 90°C in a separator in which oil is purified by hot condensate. Oil should be dehydrated in the same separator before beginning the process. After purification of turbine oil with alkali it is washed by hot condensate and purified by adsorbents.
Due to the fact that the use of chemicals is connected with pre- and post-purification of oils, combined units are used for deep oil purification, wherein all stages are connected into one common process purification scheme. All of these units and devices, depending on the turbine oil purification scheme, are equipped with a rather sophisticated equipment (settling tanks, pumps, mixer tanks, filter presses) and are designed both as stationary and mobile devices. In industry, there are multipurpose plants, which allow to conduct oil purification process according to any individual method.
