Overview

Rotary-table milling machines are designed to machine surfaces (external and internal) of cylindrical and conical shape and grooves, cutting off and processing of end surfaces, thread cutting. When using additional devices, one can perform operations such as mold turning, milling and grinding. Usually such machines process billets with a small height and large diameter and weight. Rotary-table milling machines are used for roughing of steel products and color steel as well.

Rotary-table milling machines can be of small and larger sizes used to machine large-scale and heavy work pieces with the maximum diameter of 25 m. This group of machines completely replaced frontal group, as component setting in the processing is much more convenient and safer. And the position of the faceplate on the rotary-table milling machine prevents spindle cantilever load as well. This allows you to machine the work pieces at higher speeds, while achieving high accuracy. These machines are equipped with turret that increases productivity. Rotary-table milling machines can be classified into 2 separate categories:

  • Single-column design for machining work pieces with a diameter of maximum 1500 mm
  • Double-column design for machining work pieces with a diameter over 1650 mm

In single-column rotary-table milling machines, the turret is usually connected with a tool head. The tool head is moved manually in horizontal direction, and automatically along the bridge guides.

The turrets can be moved vertically along the tool head guide. There is a side tool head with a holder at the column side that can be moved both manually and automatically vertically and horizontally.

Machining is performed simultaneously by the side tool head and turret cutters, which is most important when used in heavy machinery to process large items such as hydro turbines and generators.

Description and main components of rotary-table milling machines

Rotary-table milling machines belong to the lathe group; their distinguishing feature is vertical position of the spindle. Such machines can process heavy work pieces, whereby the work piece length is limited.

The main parameters of rotary-table milling machines are:

  • diameter and height of the billet;
  • rotary table diameter;
  • angle of the tool head tilt;
  • traverse relocation factors;
  • tool head travel in the vertical and horizontal position maximum extent;
  • speed number;
  • rotary-table rotation speed;
  • power.

The main components of rotary-table milling machines are:

  • table;
  • columns;
  • traverse;
  • tool heads.

The table is used as a base where a work piece is fixed. Two columns are connected to each other by the portal. The traverse containing two tool heads moves over the surface of columns. The right tool head is called a turret; it includes a slider that moves vertically and a longitudinal slide. The slide contains a turret, which holes contain holders with tools. The turret is used to:

  • treat surface;
  • drilling;
  • trim ends.

The second tool head is called a boring one and includes a longitudinal slider, which is used to install the rotating part. Rotating part, in its turn, has a slider, where cutting tool holder is mounted. Boring device is used to:

  • machining of conical surfaces;
  • cut internal grooves;
  • bore holes.

The side tool head is located on the right column and includes a longitudinal carriage, tool holder and a slider. The side tool head is used to machine the outer surfaces.

Due to the high performance and durability of operation, rotary-table milling machines are widely used in the market of metal-working equipment.

Operating principle and configuration

Rotary-table milling machines are used for machining of heavy billets with a large diameter, but with a little height. In such machines, a round table is placed horizontally, which greatly facilitates the installation and alignment of work pieces. Furthermore, the spindle is offloaded from bending forces, which provides a more accurate machining of parts.

Vertical turning lathe performs turning operation of internal and external surfaces of different profiles with a cutting tool. Machines are equipped with a turret. Central holes in the billet are machined with machine taps, drills, core drills, etc. Using additional equipment you can perform operations as follows:

  • milling;
  • grinding;
  • chiseling.

Except for multi-purpose rotary-table milling machines, there are task specific machines equipped with circular rotary table, and revolving tower machines, designed for boring large diameter parts.

The basic movement of the vertical turning lathes is the rotation of the table, which carries the billet. When the side and vertical tool heads travel, they create feed movements. Additional movements include high-speed vertical movement of the cross beam, the rotation of the turret, etc.

The side tool head is used for machining of external surfaces (vertical feed), as well as for grooving and chamfering (horizontal feed). Vertical tool head is used for processing the end surfaces (horizontal feed), as well as for treating outer and inner surfaces (vertical feed).

Rotary-table milling machines are of two types:

  • Single-column design, equipped with a rotary table of up to 1600 mm;
  • Double-column design, equipped with a larger diameter of the rotary table.

Single-column machines can be machines with manual control or CNC controlled machines. Machines with manual control process various types of large-scale billets with a diameter of up to 1250 mm:

  • grinding and boring cylindrical and conical surfaces;
  • drilling;
  • sinking;
  • reaming;
  • grooving;
  • turning the flat end faces;
  • segmenting;
  • thread cutting and processing of shaped surfaces (if special devices are available).

CNC controlled machines are used for processing of work pieces of complex configuration:

  • grinding and boring surfaces with curvilinear and rectilinear generators;
  • drilling;
  • sinking;
  • reaming of the central hole;
  • teething ring groove, thread cutting with various types of chisels.

Double-column rotary-table milling machines are designed for machining billets with diameters up to 25,000 mm. Two columns bound with the crossbar are mounted on the base. The cross beam carries two vertical tool heads and is moved along the post guides. One of the tool heads is provided with a turret. The remaining components of the double-column machine are similar to nodes of the single-column unit.

In addition to the single column and double-column vertical lathes, there are high-speed machines that do not have sliding guides and loads fall upon spindle bearings and thrust bearing.

Current models of light vertical lathes are equipped with gearbox with integrated electromagnetic clutches allowing changing the rotational speed of the rotary table in accordance with the rotation of the vertical tool head turret.

Application

Rotary-table milling machines are designed for machining large billets of a significant weight and a small length (large gears, flywheels, etc.), by turning. This equipment performs the following tasks:

  • turning;
  • processing and facing of inclined surfaces;
  • turning and boring cylindrical and conical surfaces;
  • trimming the ends;
  • teething ring grooves
