Vibrating mills and crushers. A brief overwiew
Vibrating mills are widely used for fine grinding in building material production. Mills are known by two ways of grinding: dry and wet.
Mill body has metal cylinder or is of tray type. A horizontal shaft rotates on ball bearings inside the body. It is connected with electric motor via elastic coupling. Mill body stands on foundation and filled with grind balls. Shaft rotates and thereby puts the mill in oscillating motion. Body walls under vibration send repeated pulses to balls, due to which material and balls perform complicated motions. Oscillation frequency increases and motion state changes: balls are thrown, collide with each other, make reflective blows and throws and all material accumulates in the central part of a mill. Thus, a material fatigue fracture mode occurs. This is the main feature of vibrating mills grinding mode.
Vibrating mill operating mode is affected by oscillations frequency and amplitude, balls shape, their size and material of which they are made, body filling by balls level, ratio between balls number and mill product filling-in. Influence and grinding method: dry or wet, grinding mode: intermittent or continuous, etc.
Vibrating (deflecting) crusher
Energy in vibrating jet mills required for material grains grinding flows by superheated steam or compressed air jet, which leaves the nozzle at supersonic or sonic speed.
Such unit’s chamber is plane and horizontal, processed material is fed into chamber via injector. Grinding chamber height does not exceed 25 - 60 mm, a diameter is less than or equal to 1200 mm. Chamber has the nozzles, angled at the end wall. Superheated steam or compressed air is fed into chamber through these nozzles. Jet velocity can reach 600 - 800 m/sec. Thus, processed material particles are captured by one jet and then by another and dropped out from the periphery to the center and backward. When moving the particles repeatedly collide with each other at high speed, resulting in vibration grinding (from initial dimensions of 3-6 mm to 1-6 µm). After the grinding, inertial forces acting on particles fade and flow away along the pipe to receiving tank. The finest particles flow by rising jet and captured by the dust collector-cyclone.

The processed material in device equipped with a vertical pipe is fed by injector to the milling compartment located in lower section of oval closed loop.

Compressed air or superheated steam is fed to the chamber by nozzles. Nozzles are arranged in two rows where the flows outgoing from them block each other. Material particles flow by jets and repeatedly collide. While grinding the particles upraise along the left branch of the oval loop with a speed of 150 m/sec. While passing the upper loop bends, particles are classified by size.
This device is equipped with inertial dust collector located in the upper part of the right loop branch and shaped as louver made of plates with alternate inclination angle. Ground material passes the plates and is removed via the pipe. Large particles are retained, reflected from plates and return for additional grinding along descending loop branch.
This mill type is suitable for ultrafine grinding (up to 0.5 microns at initial particle size of 150 microns).
The advantages of vibrating jet mills are high-efficiency grinding, ground material particles classification, low wear. The disadvantages are increased consumption of compressed air, need for compressed air or superheated steam temperature and pressure support, need for even feed of processed material.
