Wastes in incinerators are burned at 700–900°C, and discharged gases are burned up at 1100–1200°C during several seconds, ensuring complete combustion and decomposition of complex organic compounds.
When using incinerators, it is possible not only to solve the problems related to waste treatment and to improve environmental situation, with the industrial safety requirements ensured, but, sometimes, it is possible to convert an expensive waste management industry into a profitable one. There are no alternatives for incineration if the delivery of wastes to the site of treatment or landfilling is technically impossible or economically unfeasible.
Currently, incineration is the best treatment method for such polymers as polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, etc. For many liquid and gaseous chemicals and petrochemical wastes, incineration is also the best choice in terms of pollution and cost-effectiveness.
The components of an incinerator plant:
The necessary amount of thermal energy, which is required for treatment of a process material to a permissible level, is defined by physical properties of the process material, namely, by the evaporation temperature.
Due to varying properties of the process material, the real temperature, which should be reached to provide a cleaning level required, is determined as a function of current characteristics.
The temperature of a rotating furnace is generated by an automatic burner. The burner provides for continuous warming-up of the process product, operates in an automatic mode and is programmed by an operator.
As the air is being continuously taken out from the rotating furnace’s internal space, it operates at negative pressure. Due to that minimal combustion of evaporated hydrocarbons takes place in the furnace. Burner control equipment automatically maintains the thermal mode. The burner and furnace are insulated by double stainless-steel plates minimizing the amount of air incoming from the environment.
The process material is prepared before treatment: a loader is used to mix the material with sand to reach the consistency used in general practice of processing. The material, which is too viscous or sticky, will not be able to ensure continuous consistent flow, thus resulting in reduction of performance and worsening of operating characteristics.

Flue gases that are released from an incineration plant and that used to be discharged into the atmosphere in earlier plant configurations are now delivered to a steam boiler to heat the water therein. The steam generated in the boiler is delivered to a steam turbine that rotates a generator; the generator, in its turn, generates electricity.
The operating characteristics of a full-cycle incinerator and all its major “units”: an incinerator, steam turbine and steam boiler, are defined by the facility’s needs for energy resources, and by qualitative and quantitative composition of wastes to be treated at the plant.
