Plate (plate-type) filter is a sealed vessel with filter plates located inside the housing. Filter operates under pressure and is used for cleaning of fine suspension with a part of solids up to 0.8%. Filtration with alluvial layer allows clarifying suspension by solids concentration up to 0.05%. When the part of solid particles in the suspension is about 1-5%, plate filters operate in cake separation mode with its subsequent washing and drying.
A group of plate filters includes nine types varying in geometric shape of plates, their position within the housing, design of the very housing, cake discharging method and so on.
Plate filters are effectively used for separation of viscous, volatile, oxidizing and toxic suspensions. Hydraulic cake washing (“wet discharge”) or vibration of filter plates ("dry" method of discharge) are often used in plate filters design.
Among all types of plate filters the most promising design is the one with vertical housing position. Such filters occupy the smallest space while maintaining high levels of filtering ability.
Plate filters are used to filter liquids containing a small amount of solids. Filtering elements of plate filters are cloth bags completely immersed in liquid. Therewith, the filterable liquid is sucked from the inside to make the cake turn out on the bag outside.
To prevent convergence of the bag walls during suction, it is put on a special frame having a wavy or meshy surface. Thus, a constant free volume is formed in the filter that is required to move the filterable liquid to the outlets.
Plate filters have a developed working surface. Filtration process generally is carried under vacuum in such devices. In some cases slight overpressure not exceeding 1 ga is used.
Plate filter consist of a plurality of filtering elements mounted on one frame and one unit lifting and moving with a use of telpher or overhead traveling crane.
Plant vertical filter with hydraulic cake washing-off. Welded filter housing consists of a cylindrical sidewall passing into a cone (in the filter bottom). Elliptical shaped cover is attached to the housing flanges with a shutter. Turn of the shutter ring is carried out by means of hydraulic cylinders, rods of which are connected with the ring. Mostly the design includes two air cylinders pivotally mounted on the filter cover. Additional oscillating air cylinder is used to lift / lower the cover.
Rectangular filter plates consisting of filter screen and drainage are located inside the filter housing. Plate case frame has a special profile. A tube put in rotation and reciprocating motion by a special mechanism is provided for cake washing-off.
The filter operates at a pressure up to 0.5 MPa. The suspension is pumped into the housing through a special fitting pipe. And purified filtrate is discharged through the manifold downpipe. The cake is discharged through the pneumatic valve at the bottom (cone) part of the housing.
The preset filtration mode (including the duration of certain operations) is maintained automatically.
Fittings available on each frame and connected to a common manifold are designated for filtrate discharge. Frames package is placed in a closed cylindrical vessel. Pressurized suspension is fed into the vessel and is delivered into the frame cavities, where it is separated into a filtrate and solids. The filtrate is removed through the manifold, whereupon the jet of compressed air or water is fed into the chambers to separate the cake. The lower fitting of the vessel is used to discharge the cake. The area of working surface of the plate filters is up to 150 m².

Filtration process is carried out with a cloth or auxiliary substance alluvial layer that is involved in the filtration.
The cake is removed by the pressurized liquid fed through the nose pieces of washing-off system. The cake is discharged via valve located at the bottom.
A separate filter element is a tubular frame covered with cloth and having openings on its lateral surface. The liquid passes into the frame and is removed over the tube to the manifold, which is connected to a vacuum pump.
Filter operation is performed as follows. Filtering elements are immersed to the tank, and they create a certain vacuum. Thus, the liquid flows into the elements and the cake from the filtrate remains on the surface. At that time when cake thickness exceeds a certain value, then still maintaining the vacuum to keep the cake on the filter, the filtering elements are transferred to another tank. There they are washed with water or other liquid. After the washing process is completed, the cake is dried by means of air sweeping, and then it is removed by means of steam backflow, air or water in the third tank. To prevent fluid sedimentation often the tank is fitted with stirring device.
